Key Members of Congress Laud HbA1c test in detecting diabetes

The co-chairs of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus on July 14 published an OpEd in a Capitol Hill newspaper pointing to the power of the hemoglobin A1c test (HbA1c) in identifying individuals with elevated glucose levels, known as pre-diabetes. Under the headline “Pull 57 Million Americans from the Brink of Diabetes,” Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Rep. Michael Castle (R-DE) wrote that sound, evidence-based tools—such as better diet and exercise, as well as HbA1c testing—can help prevent millions of Americans with pre-diabetes from becoming fully diabetic.

The article, which ran in The Hill newspaper, pointed to a recent clinical study supported by the National Institutes of Health that found that exercise and changes in diet can reduce the risk of diabetes by 58 percent. With regard to HbA1c testing, the piece underscored that the consumer-friendly aspect of the test—that consumers do not have to fast ahead of time—may encourage more people to get tested. In addition, Reps. DeGette and Castle cited the RFL-sponsored pre-diabetes briefing on Capitol Hill on July 12 which was done in cooperation with the Congressional Diabetes Caucus.
