U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette Cites Value of Lab Testing
The co-chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo), emphasized the value of laboratory medicine in managing chronic disease in an opinion editorial published in the February 6, 2008, edition of "The Hill", a Washington, DC, newspaper that circulates widely in Congress, federal agencies, and the Washington news media. Citing the fact that diabetes costs Americans $174 billion every year, Rep. DeGette stressed that the costs of detecting and controlling diabetes stand in stark contrast: "A laboratory test that tells whether a patient has high blood glucose levels costs $7.40. A hemoglobin A1C test that tracks changes in a patient’s glucose levels over three months costs $13."
